Situated on 365 acres on Upper Nashotah Lake, 30 miles west of Milwaukee, Nashotah House is a small village in the midst of a rapidly growing suburban community, where students, faculty, staff, and their families live, worship, study, and work. While the majority of our students are preparing to become parish priests, the lifestyle and educational goals of the seminary are designed to prepare our students for a variety of ministries, lay and ordained.

Community life is highly valued here and is grounded in the experience of common prayer. Each day at Nashotah House begins and ends before the altar of God. Faculty and students attend the daily offices and Eucharist every weekday and strive to build a community that reflects our communion with God. Theological education is understood as formation of the whole person for ministry. Thus, every interaction—in the chapel or the classroom, in the refectory or the home, on weekly work crew assignments or in service to neighbors in the towns and cities around us—is preparation for ministry.

In the Master of Divinity (M.Div.) program, students follow a core curriculum which binds them more closely as brothers and sisters as they explore together the implications of their studies for ministry in Christ's Church. This curriculum moves from biblical and historical foundations, to the study of theological principles, to the application of principles and the integration of theory and practice.

A one-year Anglican Studies certificate program is designed for students who have previously studied in a non-Anglican seminary. A two-year Master of Arts in Ministry program is a distance education program designed for students who are unable to relocate to Wisconsin for residential theological education but who seek the spiritual ethos and unique emphases of Nashotah House. The certificate program and the M.A. in Ministry program draw on the M.Div. curriculum to ground students in Anglican theology, practice, and devotion. In the tradition of Anglican formation, we believe that a classical theological education provides the soundest preparation for ministry in an increasingly complex and diverse world.

Nashotah House also offers programs to address the needs of those with other vocational goals. The Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.) is a first level graduate degree for people with specialized vocations in the Church.

The great missionary Bishop Jackson Kemper, James Lloyd Breck, and others founded Nashotah House in 1842 as a mission to the frontier. Nashotah House is still known locally as "The Mission" and maintains its commitment to the missionary enterprise. In the M.Div. curriculum, special emphasis is given to nurturing those gifts and skills, which serve to spread the Gospel and build up the Church in diverse cultural situations: preaching, liturgical leadership, Christian education, evangelism, and congregational development. Placements in local parishes, which represent a wide variety of styles of ministry, give students an opportunity for supervised ministry in the field, coordinated with reflection in the classroom.

One-Week Courses - January and July

Nashotah House is committed to providing educational opportunities for those engaged in Christian ministry, both lay and clergy. To this end, Nashotah House offers one-week short topic courses during January and during July. These courses are generally offered for CEU’s or for credit (3-credits at the MDiv level). Lectures are scheduled such that individuals who register for these one-week courses can participate fully in the chapel and community life on campus during the days they on campus for a course. When courses are taken for credit there is general pre-course reading assigned and final papers due some weeks after the course. Instructors include Nashotah Faculty and visiting lecturers. Residential students take these courses to broaden either education beyond the MDiv and MTS core curricula. They earn elective credits for these courses in their degree programs. These one-week courses are offered in various areas including Bible, Parish Ministry, Ascetical Theology, Homeletics, and Liturgy.
