Master of Arts in Ministry Program

Accredited Online Theological Education with a Formative Residential Component

Nashotah House has been piloting a Distance Learning program since July 2006. The Association of Theological Schools announced in June 2007 that it has fully approved Nashotah House’s Master of Ministry Degree (M.A. Min.) program. The curriculum is designed to prepare for ordained ministry and other positions of leadership in the Church those candidates who cannot relocate to a seminary for a residential theological education, or those students who would like to begin their seminary education from a remote location before ultimately transfering into the residential program.

Degree Program Design:
The requirement for the M.A. in Ministry degree is 48 semester hours of credit to be earned by taking eight six-credit modules, one at a time. Modules are planned to be approximately three months in duration and consist of one week of intensive residential study on the Nashotah House campus; the remainder of the module consists of lectures, assignments and class interaction through online distance education. The residential week includes classroom time, study, worship, prayer, and fellowship.

The eight modules are based on the seven subject areas specified for ordination preparation in the Episcopal Church Canons of the General Convention, Title III, Canon 8, Section 4, item (e). The eight modules are as follows:

  1. The Holy Scriptures—Old Testament;
  2. The Holy Scriptures—New Testament;
  3. Church History, including the Ecumenical Movement and the History of World Missions;
  4. Christian Theology;
  5. Christian Ethics and Moral Theology;
  6. Studies in Contemporary Society, including the Proclamation of the Gospel, Missionary Theology and Missiology, Apologetics, Evangelism and Church Growth;
  7. Liturgics and Church Music; Christian Worship and Music according to the contents and use of the Book of Common Prayer and the Hymnal, and authorized supplemental texts;
  8. Theory and Practice of Ministry.

Degree Program Accreditation: Effective June 2007, the M.A. in Ministry degree program has been formally approved by the Association of Theological Schools.

Admissions Requirements: The M.A. in Ministry is a post-baccalaureate degree. Admissions requirements include a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, evidence of the commitment and qualities desired for pastoral leadership and academic ability to engage in graduate study. Certain students who do not hold a baccalaureate degree may be admitted to the program. For applications and information about the degree program, email the Admissions Office.
