Fr. Gabig has long been a student of culture, always looking the world through two lenses at the same time the cultural and the theological. His undergraduate studies through the University of Pittsburgh led him to spend several years abroad training in French and Spanish business translation. Near the end of his undergraduate career he had a profound Christian faith encounter with the Scriptures and fell in love with them. In turn he began to volunteer teaching at his local Episcopal Church with young people. Soon afterwards he started taking courses in Biblical and Systematic theology at Trinity School for ministry near his home. After graduating in 1995 he served for eight years as Assistant Rector at the Church of the Ascension near the University of Pittsburgh overseeing student ministries and foreign missions. In 2002 He moved to England, undertook Ph.D research at King’s College, London and served as a Chaplain at New College, Oxford. He completed his Ph.D. in 2007, looking at the role of popular culture (film in specific) in the religious lives of American teenagers.
His research interests are concerned with issues of ancient creedal faith lived out in contemporary contexts, focusing on catechesis, popular culture and mission in America. His publications include one book, Youth Religion and Film (2007), articles and reviews in The Journal of Youth and Theology, The Journal of Youth Ministry, The Trinity Journal of Theology and Ministry and The Youth Specialties: On-line Journal. He is currently working on two projects Missional Anglicanism and The Disneyization of American Religion (forthcoming).
Fr. Gabig came to Nashotah House as adjunct professor of Church and Contemporary Society in 2007 and was made Affiliate Professor of Practical Theology in 2010. Though spending most of his time teaching and writing Fr. Gabig still serves as a volunteer youth worker at his local parish. He has been involved in children’s, youth and young adult ministries in the U.S. and U.K. for more nearly 25 years and has had the opportunity to teach in Anglican circles on five continents. Additionally, he serves as Co-Chair of the Catechesis Taskforce for the Anglican Church in North America.
His hobbies include reading, travel, foreign languages, theatre, cooking, gardening, art, music (particularly Jazz and choral tradition from the Renaissant and Baroque eras) performing in drama and ballet, outdoor sports, Scriptural studies and foreign missions.
