General Information

Nashotah House is pleased to offer again in January 2007 an Epiphany Term to be held between the seminary’s Michaelmas and Easter Terms. Three graduate-level courses will be offered in a one-week intensive format. The courses will be taught on the Nashotah House campus and students can register to take the courses for academic credit or for CEU’s.

Epiphany Term provides an opportunity for clergy, and lay persons to enhance the effectiveness of their ministries and for residential students at Nashotah House to broaden their preparations for ministry through these courses not available during the regular academic terms.

Classes meet for one week, Monday-Friday, six hours per day. Pre-reading may be assigned to be completed prior to the beginning of the courses and papers and examinations may be assigned to be completed in the weeks following the classroom instruction when the course is taken for academic credit. Courses are taught by both Nashotah House faculty and by visiting instructors.

January 2007 Course Offerings
January 15-19, 2007

PM 14 - Loving and Leading the Small Congregation
The Rev. Dr. J. Douglas McGlynn, Associate Professor of Parish Ministry, Nashotah House

Though more than half of the Episcopal Churches in the United States have fewer than 100 persons in church on an average Sunday, many of the priests now serving them or likely to do so in the near future have had little or no exposure to the significant research on the relational dynamics predictable in such congregations. This course examines that research in a determined attempt to prevent or attack the unnecessary discouragement, frustration and joyless ministry experienced by many priests in small congregations.

ID 10 - Early Christian Reading of the Old Testament
The Rev. Patrick Henry Reardon, Senior Editor of Touchstone Magazine

This course, consisting of lectures and assigned reading, explores early Christian understanding and interpretation of the Hebrew Scriptures, chiefly as reflected in the apostolic writings of the Church, with special attention to the relationship between such reading and the early development of Christian theology.

AT 13 - Christian Spirituality in the Early Middle Ages
The Rev. Dr. Arnold W. Klukas, Associate Professor of Liturgy and Ascetical Theology, Nashotah House

This intensive course explores the beginnings of the Christian spiritual life from the Desert Fathers to the riches of the Celtic and Anglo-Saxon saints. Their writings and experiences will be discussed with a view toward asking what can be learned from them for our spiritual life today.
