Topic:  "The Strange Silence of the Cross in Christian Preaching"

Noting a dearth of clear and compelling accounts of the death of Jesus in church, Fleming Rutledge's penned her recent theological magnum opus, Crucifixion: Understanding the Death of Jesus Christ to fill the gap. And so it is!  Justly meeting with acclaim and finding a wide, enthusiastic readership, Crucifixion was named Christianity Today's 2017 Book of the Year. This is both a high honor and perhaps indicative of something else inadvertently. While finding a wide readership among evangelicals and Catholics, the place of least traction is in the mainline Protestant churches, Fleming Rutledge's native habitat and the original target.

Why is this? And what might it mean? And how might the cross still speak and re-order churches otherwise preoccupied?

We eagerly await Fleming Rutledge's lecture: "The strange silence of the cross in Christian preaching."
